“Interestingly making the statement as more the carbon emission crime you do more the developed country you are”.
Our development journey is leaving a dark footprint behind.
Cities on average provide 80% of economic base but as much of the noise and environmental impact including contaminated air and water. Large disparities have emerged as poverty has urbanized over 200 million people live in poverty in Asia's cities. And many more are vulnerable to economic and environmental shocks.
Asia's Urban Challenge
Managing cities in this context requires a new approach:
Climate Change Background and Challenges
ASIAN CITIES Region Economies and the Energy System show an enormous population growth (average 3%/a) compounding their global impact are especially vulnerable to the climate change.
Are we really smart people building smart cities & neglecting the consequences for comforting our unsustainable beliefs? Think & Act before it’s too late!
During the lifecycle of Building if we suffice in the use of energy & reduce harm to environment without hampering the needs of the future generations we probably are on the track of sustainability.
The main challenge: “To do more with less”
Regulatory and control measures
Barriers to achieving energy efficiency and sustainability
-Lack of legislation, unavailability of information, high first-costs, market failures, etc.
Effectiveness of policy instruments
-If introduced and enforced effectively & Need for other supporting policy instruments to overcome other barriers
Two types of regulatory and control instruments
PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN (For thought munching)
according to Jason F. McLennan,
“The Philosophy of Sustainable Design”, 2004
1. Learning from natural systems (Biomimicry Principle)
2. Respect for energy & natural resources (Conservation Principle)
3. Respect for people (Human Vitality Principle)
4. Respect for place (Ecosystem Principle)
5. Respect for future (“Seven Generations” Principle)
6. Systems thinking (Holistic Principle)
It’s high time that we need personalities & not just graduates, personalities not just willing to design focusing on technical, ecological, climatic, structural solutions for build environment, personalities who can develop new strategies & maintain a balance for socio-cultural context, ecology & economy. Whereas our journey if approached in sustainable manner will leave a Green footprint behind not only for us but generations to come will be the beneficiaries.
